Gordon Ramsay is now a spokesperson for plant-based dairy brand Silk. The celebrity chef, who once said he was ‘allergic to vegans’, has revealed he has cut dairy out of his diet ‘on a day-to-day basis’.
The 54-year-old chef appeared in a video on Silk’s Instagram to promote the brand’s oat milk – advertized as the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time).
“Hi guys, it’s me, Gordon Ramsay. The G.O.A.T. of yelling in kitchens. You know what else is G.O.A.T.? Silk Oat. It’s the G.O.A.T. of oat milk,” he said in the clip.
Other celebrities partook in the campaign, too: dancer Aubrey Fisher, cheerleader Gabi Butler, and vegan actor Alicia Silverstone.
Gordon Ramsay and veganism
Just prior to the reveal of Ramsay’s partnership with Silk, the chef spoke to publication Delish about his ‘plant-based journey’.
Ramsay began dipping his toes into the vegan scene around eight years ago. His kids were the initial catalyst for the shift, he said, but he began to integrate plant-based food into his professional life, too.
“From a restaurateur’s point of view, I could see a more creative demand for it [plant-based cooking]. So it keeps chefs on their toes,” he told Delish.
“And then when I got to delve into the detail of what that movement meant, I had gone on to oat milk.”
The decision was an easy one, he said. “With the sort of demanding times in my schedule, cutting dairy out of my diet on a day-to-day basis was absolutely crucial.”
He continued: “Here’s the thing. I think we need to be front runners, and we need to be example-setters
“Getting creative with plant-based is equally as important as cooking fish or meat. And I think giving the customers the balance on offer, but it needs to match the standard. And that’s what we worked extremely hard at.”
Gordon Ramsay controversy
Ramsay’s history with plant-based food has not always been so positive. In 2016, a Twitter user asked the chef if he’s allergic to anything. Ramsay quipped back: “vegans.”
In 2018, he took to Twitter again to say: “I’m a member of PETA! People eating tasty animals….”
But an apparent change of heart inspired the star to announce, just two months later, he was ‘going to give this vegan thing a try’.
The following year, Ramsay’s London-based restaurant Bread Street Kitchen launched its first-ever vegan menu. It included risotto, pizza, sundaes, and a chocolate avocado mousse.
“Veganism is on the rise, so we’ve got to adapt and we just have to eat a slice of humble pie,” he commented about the launch.
