The plant-based industry continues to expand in Asia as Burger King Japan adds the latest version of the Whopper to its menus.
Plus, a pepperoni giant is expanding into plant-based alternatives in the US and vegan protein is stepping up a notch at Whole Foods Markets both across the pond and in the UK.

Burger King Japan introduces new iteration of plant-based Whopper
Version 2 Whopper just dropped in Japanese Burger King outlets. Moreover, the bunless burger – which features two plant-based patties grilled on an open flame – is dubbed a ‘new sensation of deliciousness’. It also includes fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, ketchup, and mustard.
The soy-based meat alternatives are created by v2, a plant-based company based in Australia.
‘We need a version 2 for our own health and for the health of the planet. We’re using the latest science from CSIRO to make plant-based food that tastes great and satisfies the needs of a rapidly growing global population’ notes CEO Nick Hazell.
Customers can find the new Whopper in select stores from now until September 2.
US supermarket chain Publix offers plant-based chicken products in stores for the first time
The employee-owned chain Publix – the largest of its kind in the US – is launching Chickenless Tenders in its more than 1,200 stores.
Under the GreenWise brand, the pea protein-based Tenders off 11 grams of protein per serving. Other ingredients include fava bean protein and canola oil.
Moreover, it’s come at a time where the chain is meeting consumer demand for plant-based options.
Publix’ Communications Director Maria Brous told Green Queen: “By developing these meatless products under our trusted private-label GreenWise brand, we are offering our customers high-quality options to support their lifestyle.”
Ascent Protein expands product line in Whole Foods Market
US and UK-based natural foods retailer Whole Foods Markets is adding a new plant-based protein powder to its shelves.
Courtesy of Ascent Protein, the product is designed to support muscle health and athletic performance. It’s available in Chocolate and Vanilla Bean and offers 25 grams of protein per serving. And, it’s certified organic.
‘Whether you’re mixing up a post-workout plant-based recovery drink, or adding some extra protein to your morning smoothie, our organic plant protein is something you’ll look forward to drinking’, the brand claims.

Pizzas are getting more plant-based in the US service industry with new vegan pepperoni launch
Hormel Foods – dubbed the makers of the US’ best-selling pepperoni – is launching a plant-based alternative. Under the Happy Little Plants brand, it’ll be arriving at restaurants across the country this week.
Hormel Foods’ Anthony Panichelli said the team worked with chefs, foodservice operators, and ‘pizza experts’ on the plant-based pepperoni.
The result is a ‘plant-based pepperoni style topping that cooks and tastes exactly like traditional pepperoni’.
JUST Egg Folded lands in South Africa
Eat Just Inc.’s JUST Egg is coming to the country in folded form. This makes it the first vegan egg to launch in Africa.
The products are mainly made from mung beans and are free from nuts, soy, and gluten. Moreover, it’s part of a project to address social, health, and environmental issues across the continent.
