Mexican plant-based food brand Asanté is supporting the homeless population of Los Angeles, California, by donating thousands of meatless meals.

This is in partnership with Meet Each Need With Dignity (MEND), a charity organization offering poverty relief support.

Helping the homeless

As part of the rollout, Asanté is providing 500 packages – each containing four meals – to the MEND foodbank across Southern California.

Moreover, the products consist of Mexican-inspired dishes as part of Hunger Action Month.

It comes as the Hispanic community in the US has been particularly badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, a staggering 40 percent of Latinos in Los Angeles suffer from food insecurity, according to USC Schaeffer.

Plant-based brand Asanté

Mexico-based Asanté has just launched in the US market. The company’s CEO Iván Jiménez told PBN they were ‘astonished’ at how many Latino people in LA were struggling from a lack of access to healthy and nutritious foods. ‘We knew we had to do something for these families’, Jiménez said.

Moreover, Asanté just debuted four new products following a successful launch in Mexico.

The offerings include plant-based iterations of traditional Mexican dishes, such as Barbacoa, Cochinita Pibil, Pastor, and Ceviche. They’re available in ‘shelf-stable’ packs, each offering 48 grams of protein and zero cholesterol.

CMO of the company, Lori Amos, added: “Asanté is a start-up just entering the US market. But, we are calling on all plant-based brands to follow our lead and give back to their community during Hunger Action Month.

“This is not just about feeding those in need but also about providing them with nutritious meals that combat issues such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, which are especially prevalent in the Hispanic community.”

Hunger Action Month

Taking place every September, Hunger Action Month is a campaign designed to boost awareness of hunger poverty across the US.

‘Food shouldn’t be an impossible choice’, the organization states. And much of its work involves inspiring local action and raising funds to support food banks.
